In a recent episode of HIMSSCast titled Three Key Areas of Healthcare Cybersecurity Defense, Peyman Zand, Chief Strategy Officer at CereCore, shared his expert perspective on the evolving landscape of healthcare cybersecurity. As threats grow more sophisticated, Zand emphasized the importance of a multi-pronged defense strategy that leverages technology, expertise, and proactive management.

Here are the three key areas he highlighted:

  1. Artificial Intelligence as a Force Multiplier

Zand opened the conversation with a compelling vision for AI in cybersecurity:

“AI can be used to detect multiple things at once—anomalies, patterns, and behaviors that a human might miss.”

He explained that AI is not just about automation but about augmenting human capabilities. By analyzing vast amounts of data in real time, AI can identify threats faster and more accurately, helping organizations stay ahead of potential breaches.

  1. Virtual CISOs: Expertise on Demand

With many healthcare organizations lacking the resources for a full-time Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Zand advocated for the virtual CISO (vCISO) model:

“A virtual CISO brings deep expertise and a broad view of the threat landscape, without the overhead of a full-time executive.”

This model allows smaller or mid-sized healthcare systems to access strategic leadership and compliance guidance, supplementing an organization’s security team and ensuring they meet regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

  1. Device Management: An Underestimated Risk

Zand also stressed the importance of managing the growing number of connected devices in healthcare environments:

“Every device is a potential entry point. If you don’t know what’s on your network, you can’t protect it.”

He pointed out that many organizations struggle with device visibility and lifecycle management, which can leave them vulnerable to attacks. Implementing robust inventory and monitoring systems is essential to closing these gaps.
